Tree Diversity and Beehive
In June 2025, I had an opportunity to visit Kalinchowk Rural Municipality of Dolakha district in Bagmati province of Nepal. There I saw a carpenter making beehives. He used different wood types for different parts. He used Nepalese Alder (English name), Uttis (local name) for Alnus nepalensis (scientific name) wood log to make the external frame of the hive and wood log of Cedar (English name), Tuni (local name) and Tuna celiata (scientific name) for the inner stripes. He justified that Tuni log helped maintain an inside temperature conducive for bees. During summer, the Tuni wooden stripes keep the inner part of the hive cool, and during winter, they keep it warm.
